Never underestimate the demands of running a small restaurant. Piecemeal Pies in White River Junction has been closed for a week or more, with a handwritten sign citing a family emergency. Today I noticed a new sign beneath the old one.
"Being a small business," it said, "we are constantly facing the difficult decision of whether to be open at all times for our community, or to take care of ourselves. The financial & staffing struggles of operating a restaurant are complex, therefore we hope you, our valued customers, will understand our need to adjust the structure of Piecemeal Pies again.
"We have decided to condense and focus on our most successful, creative, fun concept of brunch.
"Beginning Friday the 13th (yes, we see the irony ...) we will be open from 10-8 Fridays, 10-3 Saturday & Sunday for our signature BOOZY BRUNCH all day.
"The rest of the week, the doors may be closed, but we are focusing on bringing you all of our cravable treats via a call ahead preorder system.
"This will allow us to navigate the perpetual staffing issues of the Upper Valley while still taking care of ourselves.
"We hope you will enjoy this new direction, and thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we continue to evolve. We must adapt and do what is best for our business and what is best for us personally."
The note concludes by directing any questions to firstname.lastname@example.org, and is signed Justin and Josh.
Best wishes to you both! It'd be great to see Piecemeal find its footing -- because whatever issues it's got, the food and the vibe are both terrific.
