Meet Mary Kay Brown, who's been helping Take a Bite Out of Hunger since 2014
The Hartford Community Coalition’s Take a Bite Out of Hunger
community meals program provides breakfast, lunch and weekend snack packs for
children and adults in Hartford during the summer. This summer, the lunch site
is White River School, Pine Street, in White River Junction.
Last summer, the HCC's Take a Bite out of Hunger supplied more than 12,000 breakfasts and lunches to families and children in Hartford. We can use your help this year! Please join us by signing up to volunteer:
Meet Mary Kay Brown and learn why she has been volunteering with Take a Bite out of Hunger:
In June of 2014, Hartford resident Mary Kay Brown sought opportunities to get involved in the local community. When she heard about Hartford Community Coalition’s then-brand new Take a Bite Out of Hunger program, it seemed like a great fit.
Mary Kay helped get Take a Bite out of Hunger off the ground by soliciting local groups and companies to donate items to fill the program’s Snack Packs. She helped advertise the program and worked a couple of mornings a week making and packing lunches during its first summer. She has also helped organize volunteer signups.
Since then, she’s learned much more about what the HCC is doing to combat food insecurity in our community.
“Feeding children in our town who might not have access to quality food throughout the summer fills a critical need for growing kids,” she says.
She adds the volunteer group discovered that many older adults in Hartford also have a hard time accessing quality food, and that this segment of our community benefits from the outreach and bagged lunches HCC provides.
“I have enjoyed the spirit of giving and helping those in need,” Mary Kay says. “We have a very generous community and lots of people willing to help those experiencing tough times."
