Kari & Kristian have been invited to lead the first installment of the NWPL’s newest book group: Literary Pairings. They are kicking things off with a science fiction pairing featuring Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower and N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season!
Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler: Published in 1993, but timely nonetheless, Parable is set in the 2020s where society has largely collapsed due to climate change, growing wealth inequality, and corporate greed, the novel centers on a young woman who possesses what Butler dubbed hyperempathy or “sharing” – the ability to feel pain and other sensations she witnesses.
The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin. A much more recent novel, Fifth Season is also the first in a series, also written by a black American woman, and also set against the backdrop of a world that has been ravaged by climate change.
Literary Pairings: Because a story is always greater than the sum of its parts, NWPL is offering Literary Pairings, which will match up two books – or sometimes a book and a movie – to be discussed together in one memorable evening.
