Join VINE Sanctuary for our first on-site public event of 2018!
It’s that time of the year again, when snow melts to mud and all of the coops, barns, pastures, and yards at the sanctuary need a good spring cleaning. But many hands make light work, and that work becomes fun when done in the company of feathered, wooly, and fuzzy friends.Attend our annual spring spruce-up party for a day at the sanctuary you will never forget. You’ll meet cows, sheep, and so many birds while working alongside like-minded humans. Your labors will be rewarded with a sanctuary tour followed by vegan snacks with sanctuary staff. If you’re feeling hardy yourself, you can also join the after-party hike to the back pasture, to visit with the “hardy herd” of cows in the back pasture.
This event is FREE and open to the public, but we do need you to RSVP at least one day in advance, so that we can make enough snacks for everybody!
What should I wear?
Wear sturdy boots or shoes that you won't mind getting muddy. Muck boots or rain boots are best, if you have them. Wear clothes suitable for messy outdoor chores -- nothing that you would be sad to see get dirty or torn. What should I bring?Bring a refillable water bottle, so that you can stay hydrated. If you have (non-leather) work gloves or gardening gloves, bring those too. If you happen to have a pitchfork or a rake, bring that too, in case we don't have enough for everybody.
Can I help with the snacks?
Yes! Sanctuary staff volunteer their time to make or buy snacks for these events. If you can pitch in by bringing something vegan to share, that's always deeply appreciated!
What will we be doing, exactly?
That will depend on the weather and on what we have been able to get done in preceding weeks. Certainly, we will be making sure that all coops, barns, and yards get a good going over. That may involve painting, cleaning, sanitizing, or helping to shift used bedding into compost piles. We also might be clearing fallen branches from pasture paths. There are always plenty of other springtime spruce-up tasks, so there certainly will be something for everyone to do!
Will we have a chance to meet the animals?
Yes! As you work, there will be plenty of opportunities to meet and mingle with many of the more than 600 nonhuman animals living at the sanctuary. After the volunteering but before the snacks will be a sanctuary tour, during which you will meet more sanctuary residents. If you’re up for extra exercise, you can join the “afterparty hike” up to the back pasture, to meet even more cows, following the snacks.
Is this event child-friendly?
It can be! TELL US IN ADVANCE if you want to bring child younger than 13, and we will be sure to find something appropriate for a child of that age to do.
