Meet Sandy. She's gone back to school after more than 35 years.
Sandy was born at Alice Peck Day Hospital in Lebanon. She graduated from Hartford High School in 1982. Her first job was as a dishwasher at Dana's by the Gorge in Quechee. She worked as a sales associate in the jewelry department at Rich's and in the shoe department at K-Mart. She was a bookkeeper at National Bank of Lebanon. Then she found her true calling - in childcare. She worked at La Petite Creche, a day care company, for 8 years. After that, she worked in the family support division of the Visiting Nurse Association for 6 years and then as a private nanny for 2 years. For the last 9 1/2 years, Sandy has worked at The Child Center at Kendal at Hanover. One of the things she loves about The Child Center is that she and the children get to interact with Kendal's older residents, which is pretty darn neat for all of them.
Regulations covering child care and instruction have changed in recent years. So in spite of having worked in the field for over 25 years, Sandy is now enrolled in classes at River Valley Community College to get an Infant and Toddler Instruction Certificate. She says it's not so bad being a student again after all these years.
Sandy lives in Wilder with her husband. She could imagine living someplace a little warmer when she retires. She's 53.
