Famed aviator Amelia Earhart made at least two—possibly three— landings in White River Junction (1933, 1935 and 1937 ) promoting Boston Maine Airways. The airline flew between Boston and Montpelier with stops in Concord (NH) and White River Jct. This particular photo has been tentatively dated as 1937 — the same year that Earhart disappeared that July over the Pacific Ocean. The young girl is identified by the Hartford Historical Society as Mildred Jane Wright. (UVM identifies her as Susan Wright.)
Earhart landed at Twin State Airport, located near what is now Sykes Avenue. The airport was built in 1929 and closed in 1950.
