Olivia Rockwood drops 27 to lead the Yellow Jackets
By John Seaver
In a close back and forth basketball game, Windsor, behind a game high 27 points from sophomore sensation Olivia Rockwood, beat the home town Hartford Hurricanes 63-58 Monday evening. The Yellow Jackets, who dressed just seven players and have no seniors on the roster, caused the Hurricanes fits with their quick, ball hawking style on defense and motion offense.
The Hurricanes, to their credit, played very well themselves getting solid efforts from Morgan White, 13 points & 7 rebounds & Corey Lieberman 8 points, 7 rebounds inside and Michaela Ricker, 10 points and Megan Bushway, 8 points, outside. Freshman guard Jasmine Jenkins, scored 13 of her team high 15 points in the second half after sitting a good portion of the second quarter with 2 fouls. When asked about his teams effort, coach Troy Guerin said "They have heart and they're a great group to coach and we all want to get over the hump for the program. They will be back at it tomorrow."
After taking a 30-28 lead into the half, the Yellow Jackets used a 22 point third quarter to open up a 52-44 lead with Evelyn Page leading the way scoring 8 of her 14 points. Bushway and Jenkins hit three pointers in the effort to close the gap in the fourth quarter but Rockwood added one of her own and the Yellow Jackets did a good job of playing keep away at the end of the game to hang on for the 5 point win.
Category 5 Hurricane Player of the game: Freshman guard Jasmine Jenkins who kept the Canes in the game in the second half scoring 13 of her 15 points and playing tough defense. Coach Guerin added "Jaz is stepping right into her role on the team, her upside is huge, needs to get stronger and she will."
