And On Singing Together
As you are quietly going about your (very cold) day in the Upper Valley, some people are making art. Odanaksis (the name is Abenaki and means "little village") is a group of artists who meet and paint outdoors (en plein air) once a week. I have written about them before (click here), seeing them as an antidote to the isolation and loneliness made famous in the book, Bowling Alone. In the Upper Valley, bowling options have declined, alas, but the members of Odanaksis continue to paint, and to do it together.

A new show, It's Cold Outside, is at the Hartland Public Library on Route 5, and will continue through February 14, 2018. The artists in this exhibition are Jo Tate, Rebecca Bense, Karen Chalom, Becky Cook, Helen Elder, Linda Laundry, Susan Rump, and Gail Barton. Two examples of their work are above and below.

Patti Warren and Rosalie desGroseilliers are sisters who had a previous exhibition of watercolors at the Kilton Library. Warren lives in Lebanon NH and desGroseilliers in Hardwick VT. They often paint together. Their new works, Zen of Watercolor, can be seen at the OSHER Gallery, 7 Lebanon Street, Hanover NH (same building as Salt Hill Pub). An opening reception will be held on January 11 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The show continues until February 27, 2018. For more information, please click here.

The Juneberry Chorus has made its home at the beautifully renovated Upper Valley Music Center since 2016. Its first concert of the year, Hunker Down and Cozy Up, will be on Sunday, January 21 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m at the First Congregational Church, 2596 Route 113, Thetford VT. Admission is free; donations are gratefully accepted at the door. The Chorus's director, Patricia Norton, has written some new pieces for this event. She is a talented and successful vocal artist, despite having been told in the first grade to just “mouth the words."
