Massive police response at intersection of Route 4 and Switch Road late Saturday
CANAAN, NH - A man was shot dead by a New Hampshire State Police trooper just before 6:30 p.m. in a field near the intersection of Route 4 and Switch Road in Canaan on Saturday.
Unconfirmed reports indicated that the officer-involved shooting came at the conclusion of a police pursuit along Route 4 and that the man who was killed had been the driver of the car which had just crashed into the field moments before the shooting took place.
There were also reports that a female passenger who had been in the car was taken to the hospital under the supervision of a police officer who rode along on the Lebanon Ambulance doing the transport. There was no immediate word as to her condition.
In a statement confirming the shooting, New Hampshire Attorney General Gordon MacDonald's office said that the name of the deceased man is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of his next of kin. An autopsy will take place in Concord on Sunday and further information is expected to be forthcoming once that is completed.
The New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit was processing the scene late Saturday evening and, in accordance with long-standing protocol, the attorney general's office said the trooper who shot the individual has been placed on administrative leave and his name will not be released until after he has completed a formal interview that will take place some time next week.
