UPDATED: Driver who died was from Jamaica, Vermont
WINDSOR - A driver is dead following a two-car crash over the noon hour on a stretch of Interstate 91 southbound near Mile Marker 54 which sits roughly halfway between exits 8 and 9.
Windsor and Hartland firefighters and EMTs responded to the scene along with several Vermont State Police troopers.
The body of the victim remained entrapped in the wreckage of their heavily damaged car in the aftermath of the crash. Troopers said it did not appear that anyone else involved in the accident was hurt.
Although there were a few snowflakes in the air following the crash, conditions at the time were relatively sunny and clear.
More information is expected to be released later today once police have had a chance to complete their crash investigation.
UPDATE: Vermont State Police have identified the driver who was killed as Peter Hayward, 70, of Jamaica, Vermont.
Police said Hayward appeared to have lost control of his Subaru Forester and entered the median, fatally striking a rock ledge before his car rebounded back onto the pavement where it was involved in a minor collision with another car. The driver of that on-coming vehicle, a young woman from Burlington, was shaken up but not hurt.
Trooper Bryson Lunderville is asking anyone that witnessed the crash who has not yet spoken to state police to please contact him at (802) 722-4600.
