On Sunday, April 21, at approximately 2300 hours, a trooper from the New Hampshire State Police – Troop C attempted to stop a red 2005 Honda Civic for speed on Route 12 in Swanzey. The driver of the vehicle attempted to flee, and the trooper initiated a brief pursuit of the vehicle. The pursuit traveled into Keene and ended on Key Road when the vehicle attempted to drive around an apartment building and became stuck in the wet lawn, said authorities.
Once stopped, all three occupants exited the vehicle. According to the NHSP, two fled from the scene on foot and were pursued by assisting officers, while one occupant immediately surrendered. Both subjects who fled were located and detained. The driver was identified as Jacob Lima, 19, of Manville, RI. Lima was arrested and charged with Receiving Stolen Property, Disobeying an Officer, Reckless Operation, and Criminal Mischief.
The passenger who fled was identified as Matthew Durand, 25, of Attleboro, MA. Durand was arrested for Falsifying Physical Evidence. During the investigation, a stolen firearm was allegedly recovered from the scene.
The third passenger was a 17-year-old juvenile, said authorities. He was detained and released to his parents without charges. During this incident, a NH State Police K9 was deployed for an article search in the area where the occupants fled. This search led to the recovery of a firearm magazine, said authorities.
Lima and Durand were held without bail and were scheduled to be arraigned in the Cheshire County Superior Court on Monday, April 22. Additional charges may be forthcoming, said the NHSP in their statement.
During this incident the New Hampshire State Police were assisted by Officers from the Keene Police Department.
