There is a new wave of western doctors embracing the life-saving changes that a plant-based diet can provide. Dr. Beth Morris, a physician and professor in South Carolina, is now board-certified in what is called Lifestyle Medicine. In this style of "medicating", the focus is on plant-based living, sleep, exercise, and stress-management.
“Heart disease, cancer, diabetes and inflammatory diseases are some of the most common diagnoses that I see,” Morris said. “A lot of people don’t realize the benefits of lifestyle change until they’ve had their first heart attack or they’ve been diagnosed with cancer." She said. “It takes effort to be healthy. We live in an area that historically has not had a very healthy food environment. The biggest problem is a lack of awareness. A lot of people aren’t aware of how easy it is to reverse their heart disease, reverse their diabetes and feel better.”” (Source)
In a recent video by ABC News titled:
We hear from the doctors and one of the patients involved at Bellevue Hospital regarding their new Plant-Based Lifestyle Program.
"Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams turned vegan to stave off diabetes, and he helped get the city to put $400,000 into this pilot program. "We are introducing in a real way, in the oldest hospital in America, a concept that is called disease reversal," said Adams.
Dr. McMacken who is heading up this program says that they're looking for people who have a history of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, or are overweight.
Scary how what you put in your body can possibly lead to all of these ailments!!
