This exhibit explores Norwich's one-room schools. A hands-on schoolroom is open for visitors to try out the desks, write on slates, and look through old schoolbooks. Photos of Norwich's 20 schoolhouses and stories about the conduct of the children and condition of the buildings are on display. In addition our exhibit examines the impact of having a military university located in the center of Norwich. Norwich University turns 200 this year. Imagine cadets marching up and down the street, skirmishing with Dartmouth students, and practicing their cannonading and musketry. Picture sons of slave holders shopping in the local store where anti-slavery pamphlets are for sale. We don't have a lot of artifacts from this era, but many diaries, letters, and pamphlets survive to tell the tales.
