Old cars and Greek mythology. Iconic European masterworks. Hold all of those threads in your head as you study the art of William C. Turner, auto restorer turned oil painter. Turner, along with seven others—Put Blodgett, Sharla Broughton, Liz Hawkes deNiord, Bruce Parsons, Neysa Russo, Alan Zola Shulman, and Gale Sweet—have just installed their new exhibitions throughout Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Turner’s works are in the Williamson Gallery.
Come in from this endless cold. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, January 24, beginning at 5 p.m, Level 4 Mall Lounge, next to the parking garage entrance. Refreshments will be served. Artists will be on hand.
Turner’s paintings entice and surprise. They are multi-layered, original in concept and composition. To those who dwell in New England, there is the familiarity of fields with old vehicles up to their hubcaps in snow.

Other works provide more challenge, as they use vehicles as stand-ins for the figure of Pegasus, for example, as well as for human and other subjects in Roman and Greek mythology. Turner’s “The Scream” (top photo) was inspired by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch’s work of the same name. In Turner's words: “In this piece the subject is a distressed old Pontiac resting on a declining infrastructure. While in the background two old men, perhaps veterans, walk into the sunset."

From the artist’s bio: Bill Turner is a professional realist oil painter. Over the years he has earned both BFA and MFA degrees in Visual Arts-Painting which would have been almost impossible as a youth because of his dyslexia. His intimate knowledge and love of machinery have been so much a part of his life that he chose to paint distressed vehicles and machinery to tell a story.
