As a folk hero, he is best known as a founder of the Green Mountain Boys and for their capture of Fort Ticonderoga from the British. In his later life, some accuse Ethan Allen of treason because he 'tried' to reunite Vermont with the British Empire, after Vermont was rebuffed its initial efforts to become a state. He died in 1789, two years before Vermont joined the United States.
