Why are we primed for outrage?

The video of Covington Catholic High School (KY) students surrounding a drum beating Native American in front of the Lincoln Memorial went viral on Saturday. Even some conservative commentators criticized the high school student in the picture.

As it turns out, the media, especially social media, jumped the gun, with the incident being more complicated than it appeared. See links below (in no particular order).
