Rob Mermin will perform a double feature of multi-media programs at the Parish Players theater in Thetford, at 7:30 p.m. on January 25-26. Best known in Vermont as the founder of Circus Smirkus, Mermin makes these rare solo appearances, he says, “on a mission to promote the traditional arts of Mime and Silent Film for the edification and entertainment of new generations.” Adventures in Mime & Space: The Legacy of Marcel Marceau is Mermin’s tribute to his longtime mentor and friend, the legendary French mime Marcel Marceau. Mermin will demonstrate techniques of classical mime, recount stories of training with the master, and present rare film clips of Marceau teaching what he called “the silent language of the soul.” For a man who works in silence, Mermin is a remarkably fine raconteur, not at all shy about speaking eloquently on the topics he loves. His complete familiarity with silent acting in all its forms, and his close friendship with Marceau, add humor and poignancy.
