Norwich Police Chief's Statement About His Retirement

Norwich Police Chief posted on the listserv about his pending retirement. It reads in full:

You may have heard that I have given my notice to the Town Manager and Select Board of my intent to retire from the Norwich Police Department on or about April 12, 2019 and that Sg. Jennifer Frank has been appointed to take over upon my retirement.  Knowing that Sgt. Frank will be taking over makes my decision to retire just a little easier.

Serving as the Norwich Police Chief has been the honor of my lifetime and the decision to retire did not come easily.  I will leave behind a career I have been honored to serve for more than 34 years and the privilege of the last 17 years with the Norwich Police Department.

I leave behind a very special family of police department members who risk their lives every day to keep our town safe.  I want them to know above all else, it has been my honor to serve as their chief and I am extremely proud of the work they do.  I know their courage and their hearts, I owe each of them my deepest gratitude for their service.

My heartfelt thanks go to the people of Norwich for their tremendous support over the years especially when officers from around the country have given the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives in the line of duty, you have stood by us and supported us.  My personal thanks for your confidence in me and for the opportunity to lead.

I want to express my appreciation to the members of the select boards who have supported both our men and women in uniform and me personally, working with us to maintain a professional well recognized and respected police department throughout the state.   My hope is that the men and women of the Norwich Police Department will be allowed to continue to perform their jobs according to state law and that politics will not prevail over public safety.

I, once again, want to express my gratitude for having been given the opportunity to serve as chief of police, but even more, the ability to help others as a police officer.  I feel blessed beyond measure to have been part of such a great team.

Thank you / Stay Safe

Doug
