Worth Knowing: Springfield, VT Hospital in "Very Serious" Financial Trouble
Governor Phil Scott issued a letter on Friday, January 4th, stating that Springfield Medical Systems (SMS) in Springfield, VT is in "very serious" financial trouble. In the letter, Scott states that he expects the board to formulate and share a plan that will ensure a "continuity of care" for the citizens of Springfield, VT by the end of business day on January 9th.
With over 750 employees, Springfield Medical Systems is an important fixture in in the town of Springfield, VT. The hospital provides important care to the rural community and the threat of closure is troubling to many local citizens. Governor Scott is not only aware of the serious nature of the hospitals financial troubles, but he is determined to see the hospital gain financial stability.
After both the CFO and CEO resigned from SMS in December 2018, Gov. Scott appointed Tom Huebner, the former CEO of Rutland Regional Medical Center, to represent the Governor's office and assist officials at Springfield Medical Systems. Huebner, along with the hospital board and administration, will investigate what happened at SMS and come up with ways to fix the hospital's financial crisis.
