Panhandler hops into car at Lebanon gas pumps but is caught minutes later in Quechee
LEBANON - A panhandler who had been spotted holding a sign that read “Stranded” on Benning Street Thursday afternoon has been charged with stealing a car that was momentarily left unattended at Sandri’s gas station.
Jack Martin, 45, of Rutland, Vermont was arrested behind the wheel of the stolen vehicle as he headed west along Route 4 through Quechee shortly after the car went missing at 10:08 p.m.
Hartford Police officers had been included in on a region-wide “be on the lookout” broadcast and quickly took Martin into custody without incident.
Lebanon Police said the owner of the car had gone inside the gas station, which sits right beside Exit 20, and left it unlocked with the keys in it and Martin simply got in and drove away.
Hartford Police have charged Martin with possession of stolen property and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. Additional charges from Lebanon authorities will be forthcoming as well.
