Truck Crashes into Post Mills Cemetery
Slippery Roads Cited in Accident Investigation
THETFORD, VT – On November 9, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a single vehicle crash occurred on VT Route 244 in Post Mills. According to Thetford Police Chief Michael Evans, Robert Southworth, 62, of West Fairlee, was traveling east on Route 244 when he lost control on the snow-covered roadway. His vehicle, a 2018 Ram pickup, left the side of the roadway, crashed through a fence and came to rest within the Post Mills Cemetery, damaging a number of grave markers. Road conditions were slippery and rapidly deteriorating due to snow. No charges have been filed at this time.

Evans reported that the crash damaged numerous gravestones, as well as the cemetery fence and another fence belonging to the adjacent Thetford Volunteer Fire Department – Post Mills Station. Southworth’s vehicle sustained moderate damage and was towed. The vehicle was insured and it expected that insurance will cover damages to any property involved, said Evans.
Thetford Police are working with the Post Mills Cemetery Association to identify families of damaged monuments in order to assist in facilitating repairs.
