November Common Cents Highlight: D Acres of New Hampshire
Supporting Sustainable Living Change Makers
Round up at the register and
donate to D Acres of New Hampshire, a local education resource for organic
farming and to resilient ecological living, this November at Upper Valley Food
Co-op! Like UVFC, D Acres aims to provide the Upper Valley Community with
resources and knowledge to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Learn more about
D Acres and their mission below:
The Mission of [D Acres] is to function as an educational center that researches, applies and teaches skills of sustainable living and small-scale organic farming. Striving to improve the human relationship to the environment, the center functions as a demonstration farm to role model exemplars of healthy living. Sharing a communal living situation, individuals come to respect and share values of interdependence and love of nature. In addition, the organization supports educational activities directed toward improving the quality of life of residents and the larger community.
For over 20 years D Acres has
provided a community center for practice, demonstration, and implementation of
a sustainable food system for this region. Our efforts include creation of the
Local Goods Guide (12 years of publication) and the Local Foods Plymouth online
farmers market in operation for 13 years. We host regular workshops and events
focused on food, education and community. Our farm serves as a training ground
for young farmers and youth from the region. We are also involved with outdoor
classroom, nature trails, compost and farm to cafeteria programs in the Mascoma
and PemiBaker school districts. In addition we support healthy living in the
area by advocating outdoor recreation thru providing access to miles of trails
for mountain biking, skiing and hiking in Dorchester.
For those that are unaware, Common Cents is a community contribution program that allows customers to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar, and the difference benefits community-supportive organizations whose missions align with the Co-op's! Twenty-five percent of donations go to the Upper Valley Haven, 25% go to the Vermont Foodbank, and 50% go to our feature organization.
We have opted to not ask customers if they would like to round up, so please, if you'd like to participate, remember to tell your cashier that you’d like to round up your purchase total in order to donate! Thanks to all who have contributed so far!
If your organization would like to be considered as a beneficiary, please email Sue at email@example.com, or apply online at: http://uppervalleyfood.coop/common-cents/application/
