HACTC Cosmetology Students Share Meaning of Respect
Respect. Engage. Learn. Work. Serve. Grow. is the Mission Statement at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center (HACTC). Respect, the first word of our Mission Statement, is a word we follow in many ways, whether it’s in the classroom or not. My name is Meghan Timmins, and I’m a senior at Mascoma Valley Regional High School. I’m in the Cosmetology program here at the HACTC, along with my classmates Sierra Adams, from Windsor High School, and Teonna Healey, from Lebanon High School. Going to the HACTC has been one of the best experiences of my life. Thanks to this school, I’m planning to go to beauty school after I graduate. I wouldn’t be where I am right now if it weren’t for the HACTC.
Sierra Adams: My favorite part of the HACTC is that it’s very welcoming. When you enter school every teacher or staff member tells you either good morning or good afternoon. Heading to the HACTC in the morning has always been the highlight of my day. Being part of this culture I feel like a better student. There are times when I wanted to give up on something because it was too hard, but my instructor Mrs. Dunham has always pushed me to keep going, and never give up because you can do it if you put your mind to it. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to be in this school and learn more about my future career path.
Teonna Healey: Without respect, we cannot get to the rest of our Mission Statement, so showing respect is a positive way to represent the school and stay true to the Mission Statement. Respect is shown throughout the HACTC in a variety of ways. Students can anonymously nominate other students for respect with “Caught In The Act” ballot cards. Cards go in a wooden box and are drawn at random once a month, and winners get a t-shirt and a pound of bacon. The rest of the cards are displayed on a bulletin board in the entry way for everyone to see. We also have a Student of the Month award that is given to a student in each class based on the Mission Statement here at the HACTC. Respect is shown by the students here towards everyone.
