On Tuesday, October 2, Upper Valley Aquatic Center (UVAC) will welcome its first Assistant Executive Director, Joe Major of Maryland. Major is a 20+ year veteran of the health and wellness industry. He comes to UVAC from Sport Fit Tennis Club in Bowie, Maryland. A graduate of Howard University, Major has managed ten clubs during his career. He has been responsible for such clubs as the Chevy Chase Athletic Club, the Downtown Athletic Club in Miami and West End Executive Club in Washington, D.C. Major also served as the district manager for the Western New York region of World Gym. He, a native of Buffalo, loves golf and was an all conference tennis player while at Howard University.

“Due to the large growth we’ve experienced over the past year, the UVAC Board of Directors felt that we needed to expand our leadership team. We are lucky to have found Mr. Major in a time when he was ready to relocate,” Richard Synnott, Executive Director said.

In addition to a new Assistant Executive Director, UVAC is also welcoming new Head Swim Team Coach, Scott Ellis of West Virginia. He will start Monday, October 15. Ellis joins UVAC’s team after spending the past 16 years developing age group swimming and growing teams as a Head Coach. He has spent the past three years in West Virginia, not only building a team to success but also building a team culture based on trust, respect and responsibility.

In addition, Ellis has helped to develop the sport of swimming by participating on the Board of Delegates as Age Group Chair, Operational Risk Chair and Coaches Representative. In the past two years, Ellis has participated in USA swimming’s leadership Summit and Safe Sport conference to help develop the direction of swimming as a sport and to protect athletes in the process. He also served as the Head Coach for the Southern Zones Age Group Championships.

Over the past 5 years, Ellis has worked to develop disability swimming and has spent time at the Olympic Training Center working with members of the United States Paralympic Team. He was nominated for Coach of the Year at YMCA Nationals multiple times over the past 10 years and received the Coach of Year honor once.

Ellis got his start in swimming by participating in triathlons and then walking on at University of Kentucky as a swimmer. He attended Eastern Kentucky University and was also an assistant coach at University of Kentucky.
