Degenerate Art, Nazi Ideology, and the Work of Gustav Klimt
Ended October 21

Dr. Deutsch will discuss some of the paintings and murals of Gustav Klimt within the context of modern art, a category of artistic expression that Hitler and the Nazis proclaimed “degenerate.” She will focus on how Nazis defined “degenerate art” and the importance of such cultural claims to Nazi ideology. She will also talk about how Klimt’s work, which the Nazis considered “degenerate art” in terms of style and subject matter, nonetheless reinforced some of the gendered assumptions of fascism.
