The Norwich Police posted this scam alert on its Facebook page:
The Norwich Police Department has received several reports by local citizens of a US mail scam targeting men in the community. The targets of the scam receive a letter in the mail alleging that the author of the letter has information regarding alleged transgressions committed by the receiving party. The letter threatens to share this information publicly and with the individual’s wife unless money is sent via BITCOIN to a particular account.
Several news media sources have written articles regarding this growing scam which include direct quotes that match those being sent to Norwich residents. Please do not respond to these mailings or send any money to the author as the claims are not a legitimate threat and have been confirmed to be efforts by scammers to fraudulently obtain money. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Norwich Police Department.
