Worth Knowing: There are some great country stores in the Upper Valley
Everyone has a favorite country store. They're tucked in alongside a twisting road, sitting right on a village green or smack in the middle of Main Street. They're our Upper Valley country stores, sometimes called trading posts, general stores or, say, Dan and Whit's.
This week we're spotlighting the Sharon Trading Post, which nearly straddles the corner of Routes 14 and 132 in Sharon, Vermont. It has a colorful bulletin board, ubiquitous at every one of these establishments.
It sells all of your usual food necessities, both dry and "wet". It has a deli and sells steaks, chicken and fish too. You can find ice cream and you can find motor oil. You can find Vermont beef jerky and Vermont maple candy.
You can find freshly baked bread.
You can pick through jars of what one day were penny candy offerings or select some prayer beads and incense to burn.
It's got a great selection of craft and non-craft beer, and it even has a license to sell wine and liquor.
It's got a little of everything, including long creaky, sway-backed floor boards. Oh and there are fuel pumps outside,
I love this store.
