Come Hungry for the Best Appetizers in the Upper Valley

You see, there’s treating yourself just by going out. Then there’s treating yourself beyond your ability to plan. Like, you planned to go out, but as soon as you crack the menu, you’re thinking “how hungry am I?” and “depends on what they got.”

A smartly designed menu makes the appetizer section impossible to miss, guiding your eyes right to something called “Duck Poutine,” and are you kidding me, is there really crispy fried duck layered in with the gravy and cheese curds?

How much to treat yourself’s no longer a question now, is it?

Folks came in BIG with their favorite appetizer recommendations. Not terribly surprising to learn, too, that a lot of these dishes are fried and/or immersed in cheese or some kind of spicy sauce. And they’re finger foods. And better for all those reasons, even if they’re very, very bad for you.

But hey, going out’s a treat, and this is the best the Upper Valley has to start you off with:

Avocado Fries! Served with sweet and sour tomato dipping sauce

Elixir - White River Junction, VT
Mussels! In a coconut–red curry sauce and fresh cilantro

Frazer’s Place - Windsor, VT
Fresh fried mushrooms!

Gusanoz - Lebanon, NH
Chicharrones! Fried pork cracklins with hot sauce

Jesse’s Steakhouse - Hanover, NH
Cheesy Tater Tots! Might be an up-charge for adding cheese. I say go for it.

Latham Tavern - Lyme, NH
Two Soft Baked Pretzels! Served with housemade beer mustard and House Gouda Beer Fondue.

Peyton Place - Orford, NH
Lobster Sliders! The menu lists “Sliders of the Day,” so get ‘em when it’s lobster!

Pine - Hanover, NH
Buffalo Cauliflower! Served Bayley Hazen bleu cheese from Jasper Hill Farm

Poor Thom’s Tavern - Meriden, NH
Duck Poutine! House-punched fries smothered in crispy fried duck, cheese curd, and gravy.

Revolution Cantina - Claremont, NH
Queso Fundido! Melted cheese fondue topped with housemade chorizo crumbles and fresh salsa. Served with tortilla chips.

Salt hill Pub - Lebanon, W. Lebanon, or Hanover, NH
Salt hill Nachos! Topped with your choice of either tangy BBQ pulled pork or house-spiced black beans, and shredded Jack, jalapenos, sour cream, and homemade salsa 

Samurai Soul Food - Fairlee, VT
Mac and Cheese Quesadillas! Topped with pico de gallo and green onion dip.

Simon Pearce - Quechee, VT
Vermont Cheddar Soup!

Suna Restaurant - Sunapee, NH
Rubbin Butts Nachos!  House-rubbed chips topped with pulled pork, diced onions, jalapeño, cheddar cheese, BBQ sauce & cole slaw. Just, wow.

Time-Out Americana Grill - Claremont, NH
Fried Mushrooms! Breaded and deep-fried, served with housemade buttermilk garlic ranch dipping sauce.

Trail Break Taps + Tacos - White River Junction, VT
Gnawful Start! Mexican “street” corn on the cob smothered in spicy aioli, cotija cheese, and micro cilantro.

Tuckerbox - White River Junction, VT
Turkish Meze Platter! Haydari, hummus, babaganoush, Turkish salsa, stuffed grape leaves. Served with lavash bread.
