Girl Scouts raise $575 in 4 hours for the Haven
Saturday was a big day for fundraising at Dan & Whit's, and it wasn't only because of ice cream cone sales in memory of Mr. G. Girl Scout Troop 10659 spent four hours outside the store -- and raised $575 to buy school supplies for the Haven.
They didn't go far to shop, either -- because they promptly went inside the store and bought the supplies.
I learned about their success from a Facebook post by Sarah Elizabeth Dell, whose niece Becca is a Brownie in the troop. Sarah is a volunteer with the troop, whose leader is the "amazing" -- that's Sarah's quote -- Erin Buck. It's the first year the troop has tried this particular fundraiser.
It's far from the first time an organization has set up outside the store to raise money for a good cause. Dan Fraser told me by email it happens about twice a month. Getting permission isn't an especially formal process -- and, of course, no one's required to spend what they raise at Dan & Whit's.
"Our rules are pretty flexible," he wrote. "Do we know you/organization? We try to only have one group here at a time."
