I'm hoping people drawn to Saturday's picnic and celebration at Huntley Meadow in memory of John Girard will help me capture the spirit of Mr. G and the gathering by sending me a photo they take there as well as a sentence or two on what they'll remember most about the day.
That seems to me a fitting way to remember a man who touched so many lives in Norwich so positively over so many years.
You can email me a photo and your thoughts at firstname.lastname@example.org. I'll send a link to the resulting DailyUV post to everyone who writes me. Maybe it'll be one or two, maybe a lot -- we'll see!
As a reminder, here are details on the day's events.
-- The service will be held at St. Denis Catholic Church on Lebanon Street in Hanover beginning at 10:30 Saturday morning.
-- A public picnic and celebration in Mr. G's memory will follow at Girard Field in Huntley Meadow on Turnpike Road in Norwich from 1 pm to 4 pm. Remarks will be offered at 1:30 pm, followed by a baseball game for children on the ball field. The family has encouraged people who attend to bring a dish to share. The forecast looks good, but if it rains, the gathering will shift to the John Girard Gymnasium at Marion Cross School
-- Memorial donations can be made to a fund started by the family to support athletic facilities and access for the children of Norwich. Checks should be made out to the Town of Norwich Recreation Department (John Girard Fund).
-- In the unlikely event you don't find enough to eat at the picnic, Dan & Whit's is donating the proceeds from all ice cream sales Saturday to the Girard Fund. Any money raised will be matched by an anonymous Norwich benefactor. Ice cream is available from noon to 8:30.
