'It's an anomaly,' but Norwich youth soccer needs two coaches NOW
Jill Kearney has made a lot of calls looking for a volunteer to coach the girls' 5th and 6th grade soccer team this fall, and time is running short. The rewards are plenty, and she needs some help.
Same goes for another volunteer to coach kindergarteners.
What's the deadline? Thursday!
"I'm sure there's somebody out there," she said. "It's a wonderful way for anybody in Norwich to get to know the community."
For either role, a background check.
A love of the sport. "That's what the kids feed off of," she said.
For the kindergarten team, a little familiarity with soccer -- "But, you know, kindergarteners" -- and a free hour a week (pick the time) from September through October. "Someone who's good with kids," she added. There's plenty of help available if you need help thinking of drills and organizing practices, from booklets to a coaching clinic coming up this weekend.
For the fifth and sixth grade girls, practices twice a week and a game once a week. Again, times are based on coach availability. Plan on an hour and a half for the practices. Games are no farther than Woodstock. As for experience, no requirements. "Ideally somebody who maybe played in high school at least, or more," she said.
It's unusual for Kearney to find herself looking for coaches at this stage of the game. The season begins on Aug. 29!
"It's better to call at this point," she said. The number is 802-649-1419, ext. 5.
