Man Allegedly Poisoned Gifford Medical Center Coworker
Braintree resident Wayne Parezo, 63, allegedly poisoned a coworker at Gifford Medical Center, on Tuesday, July 24.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department was alerted to the incident on July 25, and the investigation is still ongoing, said Capt. Kyle Kapitanski.
“This was an isolated and directed incident, so there is no risk that we are aware of to the public at large,” emphasized Kapitanski.
The victim went to the Gifford emergency room, believing that a “foreign substance” had been introduced into her beverage, according to an August 3 press release from the Vermont State Police. “We’re [still] waiting for some lab results and some other information,” said Kapitanski, adding that the lab results will help determine what substance was added to the beverage.
Kapitanski noted that the victim is “okay.” He declined to give The Herald her name, citing a request for privacy from the victim.
Parezo is no longer employed by Gifford Medical Center, said Gifford spokesperson Ashley Lincoln, who confirmed that the incident took place between two people who were employed by the hospital at the time of the incident.
“We are very fortunate to have such a responsive police department,” said Lincoln, “but I’m not speaking about details beyond that, because this is an ongoing investigation.”
Lincoln emphasized that maintaining a safe environment continues to be a priority for the medical center.
“Our commitment is … maintaining a safe working environment for our patients and our employees,” Lincoln said.
Parezo was cited to appear in the Orange County Superior Court on Wednesday, Sept. 5, and remains in the community at this time.
The Herald was unable to reach Parezo in time to comment on this report.
