This Week on UV Farms: Hot Times in the Fields, Saved By a Cool Dip
The heat -- and then torrential rain -- of the last few days got us to wondering what it's been like in the fields for local farmers and their crews. Here's a report from Danielle Allen, who with her husband Ben Dana owns and runs Root 5 Farm in Fairlee:
We're in full swing with harvest this week! We're bulk harvesting onions, carrots, beets, cabbage, and hot peppers in addition to keeping up with our regular CSA and wholesale orders. One of our crew members pointed out this morning that we seem to be harvesting the full alphabet of vegetables from arugula to zucchini. Peppers and tomatoes are ripening like crazy. It's been challenging to work in this muggy heat and dodging thunderstorms every other day, but we've been cooling off in the river whenever possible.
