It probably seemed like a good idea at the time - taking State money to fund engineering studies related to Safe Routes to School sidewalk project on Church Street. The objective was to build a sidewalk on Church Street, starting near Carpenter Street, for a safer walk to Marion Cross School.

Neighbors along the route did not all support the sidewalk and the Selectboard decided at its June 13, 2018 meeting to end the project. Under the earlier agreement with the State, the Town needs to repay $65,847.74 for work performed by two engineering firms. The State recently notified the Selectboard that it has until August 3 to revive the project, which is unlikely in light of Selectboard discussions at its July 11 meeting.

The amount owed is not in the budget for the fiscal year that began July 1st. Norwich essentially begins this budget year in the hole by about $66,000
