Explore one of the finest operating dairy farms in America and a museum of Vermont's rural past - your gateway to Vermont's rural heritage. Billings Farm features many aspects of farm work, including care of the Jersey cows and other livestock, milking of the herd, crop rotation, and feed production.
2. Crossroad Farmstand
For over 35 years, Crossroad Farmstand's extended family and crew have been practicing sustainable agriculture on their 40 acres in Fairlee, Vermont. They grow a variety of vegetables, specializing in greens and tomatoes, as well as strawberries, melons, flowers, and bedding plants. In April they open their greenhouses for flower and plant sales. They also deliver produce to local restaurants, Co-ops, and summer camps throughout the Upper Valley.
3. Crossroad Farmstand - Norwich
Crossroad's second location in Norwich also offers their wonderful produce, flowers, and CSA shares. Freshly harvested produce is transported down every day, bringing their sustainably-grown fruits and veggies closer to you! You can also find locally-raised beef, pork, and chicken, as well as local dairy, preserves, and bread - it's the perfect daily one-stop shop.
4. Farm and Wilderness Foundation
The Plymouth, Vermont nonprofit Farm and Wilderness Foundation operates seven summer camps for children ages 4-17, a family camp, and retreat facilities. Each of their unique programs shares these common themes: wilderness experiences, organic farms & gardens, living in community, cooperative work & service, life of the spirit, and homegrown art, music, and dance. The Farm and Wilderness experience is designed to awaken each person's sense of truly being alive: a sense of purpose, connectedness, and joy.
5. Hogwash Farm
Hogwash Farm is a small, diversified farm that raises pigs, cattle, sheep, and poultry. Their animals are raised outside year-round and travel less than 20 miles from the field to the table. They have a meat CSA and sell at area farmers' markets. They work hard at keeping their products feeding local families.
6. Killdeer Farm
Killdeer Farm grows certified organic vegetables and berries on a small farm in Norwich, Vermont. Most of their employees are local and have worked for them for many years. Over the years, they have hired many local young people. They also grow and sell vegetable and flower plant starts.
7. North Sugar Road Works
A nonprofit organization aimed at establishing an educational sugarhouse while stimulating the local economy and community. Founder Marc McKee is working to build an efficient, sustainably constructed sugarhouse that can serve as a model for responsible sugaring and open up discussions about the impacts of climate change on maple trees.
8. Sugarbush Maple & Cheese Farm
This 550-acre farm located on a beautiful back road 5 miles outside Woodstock has been a family business for over 68 years. Over 8000 maple trees are tapped each year, and the forests are maintained in a sustainable manner. They also have free samples of their many varieties of cheese, maple products, and a tasting table representing over 50 small Vermont food producers of jam, mustards, and spreads.
9. Sunrise Farm CSA
White River Junction, VT
Sunrise Farm is an all-CSA farm offering 130 shares of the freshest, picked-that-day vegetables imaginable. They also offer fall lamb from their flock of Navajo-Churro ewes, broiler chickens, their own maple syrup, and a selection of cheeses and baked goods from nearby farms. Though the farm is centuries old, they've been running it as a CSA since 2000.
