The vehicles involved had license plates indicating one was from Vermont and the other from New Hampshire but state troopers at the scene said little information was available beyond the fact that one driver was dead and at least one other person, presumably the driver of the other vehicle, had been taken by ambulance to a hospital.

The Hartland and Windsor fire departments were also on scene while members of the state police's accident reconstruction team went about surveying the scene and carrying out their investigation.

By mid-afternoon the Vermont State Police had identified the woman who was killed as 36-year-old Laura McNaughton of Perkinsville.  Officials said that her 8-year-old son, Isaac McNaughton, was in the car with her and was injured but his injuries were not life-threatening and he was transported to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire.

Police said the crash occurred when Joshua Rondeau, 37, of Charlestown, New Hampshire lost control of his 2008 Chevy Silverado pickup truck as he was traveling southbound on wet pavement.  Rondeau's pickup crossed clear through the median and struck McNaughton's 2007 Toyota Matrix as it travelled along the northbound side of the interstate.

Rondeau and two juvenile occupants of the pickup truck, Makayla Rondeau, 8; and Shane Esh, 11, all sustained injuries and were transported to DHMC.

The interstate reopened around 1 p.m. and the state police said their investigation into the crash is continuing.

Skid marks at the scene appeared to extend from the edge of the median clear across both northbound lanes

VTRANS crews helped shut down the highway and detoured traffic at Exit 9
