Police swarm normally quiet Main Street area

CHARLESTOWN, NH - A bank robber made off with an undisclosed amount of money but he left behind an extremely useful clue for investigators when he held up the Claremont Saving Bank branch on Main Street in Charlestown at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

"We have the note that he passed to the teller, which we believe he brought with him and which we believe will have his fingerprints on it," Charlestown Police Chief Patrick Connors said late Tuesday afternoon as officers from several departments swarmed the downtown looking for clues.

"We got the call about 3:40 p.m. when the bank teller hit the silent alarm," Chief Connors recalled.  "We were able to get a good perimeter right away.  We do believe that he fled in a vehicle."

The note stated that the robber had a weapon but the chief noted that none was actually displayed.

The teller did hand over some money to the perpetrator who had apparently walked into the building from Main Street and had left out the same door.

The robber was wearing a green baseball cap with some sort of design on the front

Chief Connor said the fact that the robber didn't think to pick the note back up was a "huge, huge" break for investigators.  "He left the note right where he put it on the counter so we are very hopeful that this will lead us to the perpetrator," the chief said, adding "The bank staff did phenomenal keeping calm and following their protocols.  I can't say enough about them.  The teller was great.  She gave great descriptions and great notifications to us.  It was a great effort on their part."

While Main Street on an summer mid-afternoon had "busy streets and a lot of foot traffic, especially in the little downtown area" only about a city block down from the police station, the chief said the bank itself only had one legitimate customer in it when the robbery took place.  "There was one other person in the bank at the time.  We interviewed him but he really just had no idea what was going on," the chief said.

The Charlestown Police Department "had a lot of help right away," the chief said, "We immediately had New Hampshire State Police on scene and the Walpole Police Department and the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office sent officers."

The robber placed a note and a grocery bag on the counter

The suspect is described as a white male in his late 20’s to early 30’s, approximately 5’6” to 5”10” tall and 140-160 lbs. with a short beard and mustache.  He was last seen wearing a green baseball cap with unknown lettering on the front, sunglasses, a green long-sleeved pullover shirt, light blue jeans and white sneakers.  The suspect stole an undisclosed amount of money, which was carried in a unique pink and gray plastic grocery bag with a floral design on it.  No weapon was shown and no one was injured.

The investigation is ongoing.  Anyone with any information is urged to contact Chief Patrick Connors by phone at (603) 826-5747 or by email at
