Hartford Community Coalition's free community meals program started this week

The Hartford Community Coalition’s Take a Bite Out of Hunger community meals program provides breakfast, lunch, and weekend snack packs for children and adults in Hartford during the summer. This year, the lunch site is White River School, Pine Street, in White River Junction. Bagged lunches are available for all community members, Monday-Friday, 11am-1pm, during school summer vacation.

Angela Emerson, an Episcopal priest who’s lived in Hartford for nine years, says she enjoys volunteering for Hartford Community Coalition’s Take a Bite out of Hunger program because “the little bit of time I spend is minimal compared to the relief, the joy, the appreciation experienced by the participants.”

Angela believes that in a world where so much food is wasted daily, there’s no excuse for anyone going hungry or feeling insecure about food: “A little time, attention, creativity, and generosity can solve this problem,” she says.

In her role as a volunteer, she has met and talked with people who either don't have enough to eat or don't have enough fresh fruits and vegetables. “I am always moved by their gratitude and cheerfulness,” she says.

Once, when she was delivering a meal to a home, the door she knocked on was opened by a young man who was married and had a baby girl. “The confusion on his face changed to sheer joy and relief when I offered him a bag of food. His ‘thank you’ was sincere and it touched my heart.”

Last summer, the HCC's Take a Bite out of Hunger program supplied more than 12,000 breakfasts and lunches to families and children in Hartford. We can use your help this year! Please join us by signing up to volunteer.
