The Storyteller of Pond Village
Dorcas Wright lives in an old schoolhouse beside a floating bridge and history is her passion.
"I'm on YouTube!" said Dorcas when I stopped by her house in Brookfield a couple of weeks ago. Dorcas lives in the old schoolhouse in Pond Village, a Vermont hamlet that had its heyday about a hundred years ago. Dorcas, who is pretty near 100, has been a Brookfield resident since childhood, when her family moved there from somewhere up in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. Recently, she was invited to talk about Brookfield history for a gathering at the church. A film crew was there, and they made this video. It's kinda buried on YouTube, with barely 30 hits so far—I would never have found it if Dorcas hadn't led me to it. Dorcas is one of my favorite Vermont storytellers, and you'll be hearing more from her; she is working on a book about her aunt Jessie—Jessie Fiske, the founder of Green Trails Inn—whom she talks about here. Have a look. You're gonna love it.
