Hobby Lobby, the Oklahoma-based arts and crafts store, is in the midst of renovating the former K-Mart location on Washington Street in Claremont. When completed, the new Hobby Lobby will include roughly 53,000 square feet of retail space. The property is owned by DSM Realty of Tewksbury, Massachusetts and has been leased to Hobby Lobby for 5 years with 3 5-year renewal options.

Hobby Lobby has over 600 retail locations in the U.S., many of which are managed by corporate employees. The closely held family company garnered national scrutiny when its founder, David Green, took a public stance against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, citing its inclusion of a provision mandating that companies provide access to the morning-after-pill. The company filed a lawsuit against the U.S. over new regulations requiring health insurance provided by employers to cover emergency contraceptives. In June, 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that Hobby Lobby and other "closely held" stock corporations can choose to be exempt from the law based on religious preferences, based on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act but not based on the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
