Worth Knowing: Longtime Hanover Store Folk to close
Online sales continue to squeeze out Main Street merchants
Longtime Hanover store Folk is planning to close in the next few months. Ted Degener opened Folk next to the old EBA's off Allen Street almost 45 years ago. He always kept the shop stocked with artisan crafts and clothing from Mexico, Central America, India and Africa, along with similarly themed domestic goods. Folk had a loyal following among Upper Valley residents and area students.
In explaining why he is closing Folk, Degener said that the pressure of competition from online sales continues to increase and that he is turning 70 in June.
While a few people have talked to Degener about the possibility of taking over Folk, nothing has been agreed upon. When Folk does close, Degener hopes to spend more time on his photography, a passion he has nurtured since the 1970's.
