Worth Knowing: Incredible community coming to White River Junction this summer
A game-changer is well on the way to opening its doors in White River Junction. The Village at White River Junction is an 80-unit assisted living and memory care “community” located at the corner of Gates and Currier Streets. We went on a tour today with Nikki Fortier, Director of Life Enrichment at The Village, and we what we saw is the future of top-shelf residential assisted living and memory care communities. The Village will be nothing short of remarkable.
The Village contains 87,000 square feet and has 5 stories. The first floor will contain a covered parking area, a commercial quality kitchen, and a bistro-like seating area with a convenience store/snack bar on one side of a double-sided fireplace. On the other side of that fireplace will be The Village’s main dining room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking Gates and Currier Streets. One gets the feeling of being right outside - actually in downtown White River Junction. Just outside the dining room windows will be resident gardens with a pergola and outdoor seating.

All of the 30 memory care units will be on the second floor. Each is a studio with a private bath and walk-in tiled shower. There will be two neighborhoods for these 30 units, one for those residents with lower level needs, the other for those with higher. There is no cut off number for residents with differing need levels, which will allow The Village to be fluid in caring for its residents. On this floor there will be a lounge and common area with TV’s, Wii, a DVD library, and activities like yoga and flexibility classes. There will be two separate dining areas, 2 kitchen areas that residents will have access to, and various other rooms for resident activities. There will also be a common area and a nurse’s office.
The third, fourth and fifth floors will house 50 assisted living units. There will be 41 one-bedroom units and 9 two-bedroom units. Each unit will have a living room, bedroom and kitchenette. There will be 2 bathrooms in each of the 9 two-bedroom units. Each of these floors will have a laundry room available to residents who’d like to do their own laundry. Assisted living residents can access all of the amenities on the top three floors.
The third floor will be themed on health and wellness. In addition to the one- and two-bedroom units, there will be a large fitness room to host classes and house exercise equipment. There will be a full-service salon, a massage therapy room and a pedicure station. There will be a family kitchen that residents can use with staff or with their families. And there will be a room for an artist-in-residence. Artists-in-residence could be poets, painters, musicians, cartoonists, etc., and will interact with the residents.

The fourth floor will be loosely themed on entertainment. In addition to the one- and two-bedroom units, there will be a large art gallery/reception space, a theatre with a raised stage, an art studio and plenty of lounge and seating areas. The theatre will be wired for inductive loop audio, which enhances the operation of hearing aids. The fourth floor will also have a first-in-the-nation rooftop terrace dog park. Because well-behaved animals up to 35 pounds are permitted after all. As if to underscore the commitment to pets, there will also be a dog salon space where residents can groom their dogs or bring in grooming or veterinary services.
One-bedroom apartment unit
The fifth floor will be a little smaller than the others but no less astounding. It will have one-bedroom residential units as well as a sun-filled conservatory with access to a rooftop terrace, a full service pub, a terrace with seating areas, and a cinema with a full theatre screen, theatre seating, and a popcorn machine.
The number of amenities and the level of detail in The Village are breathtaking. The Village has been designed as a vibrant community chock full of social and cultural activities for its residents. Its owners, Byron Hathorn and Brooke Ciardelli, have clearly brought in the industry’s top consultants to design what sure looks like the future’s gold standard approach to providing assisted living and memory care services.
Estes & Gallup is the general contractor constructing the facility. The Village plans to being operating this summer. When it opens, The Village will be managed by LCS’s Life Care Services.
