Worth Knowing: Caribbean food at The Karibbean in Lebanon
If you haven't heard of The Karibbean, I'm sorry. You've been missing out.
The Karibbean is kind of hard to describe. It's a coffee shop, an art gallery and home to delicious takeout Caribbean food. It's located at 61C Hanover Street in Lebanon, across the street from the LISTEN Center. Owned and run by Balvin Bowen and his wife, The Karibbean has been open for less than a year. Balvin and his wife hail from Jamaica and Haiti, respectively, and have brought years of cooking their favorite home dishes to the Upper Valley. While the menu changes daily, some of the regular main course offerings include jerk pork and chicken, oxtail stew and curried goat. Beans and rice and cabbage complete the groupings. Call ahead or walk in.
In addition to warm pots of coffee and delicious Caribbean food, the Karibbean offers Haitian artwork for sale, including paintings, wooden carvings and sculptures and straw handbags.
The Karibbean is normally open Monday through Friday from 9:30-5:30. It's only open from Wednesday through Friday right now because Balvin's wife is away. You can reach Balvin at 603-351-1244.
