Worth Knowing: Country Cobbler moving location in West Lebanon
The Amazon effect hits close to home.
After almost 40 years in the same location, The Country Cobbler is moving to a smaller space. The Country Cobbler, a shoe repair and leather goods store that has long been a fixture at the Glen Road Plaza in West Lebanon, is taking over a smaller retail space up the street at 75 Main Street. Owners Jeff and Nancy Peavey hope that the new space will be outfitted and ready to go by the end of May.
Jeff Peavey said that the store will continue to carry much of the same inventory, but will not be carrying as much motorcycle clothing or gifts. He said that he can't compete with Amazon. People come in and look at his goods and then go buy them at a lower cost on-line. He can't blame them for paying less for something, but it's impossible to sell things at such a deep discount when you're a Main Street merchant with all sorts of operating costs like rent, utilities and insurance.
The Country Cobbler will expand on the space it uses for shoe and boot repairs, which is a thriving part of the business, and will continue to sell leather goods as well as some select local and handmade goods.
