Not even record flooding could slow down this tournament

SOUTH BOSTON - Standing in the middle of a two-million square-foot building and watching hundreds of volleyball players from across New England slug it out simultaneously while balls fly into the air from every direction for as far as you can see quickly gives one the sensation that they have somehow landed inside a giant popcorn popper.

Ninety-one regulation volleyball courts were laid out inside the cavernous Boston Convention and Exposition Center this past weekend in order to accommodate the 2018 Mizuno Boston Volleyball Festival which went off without a hitch despite the BCEC's location just a couple of hundred yards from the edge of Boston Harbor which was experiencing all time record high tides because of the "bomb cyclone" weather system that wreaked havoc with the coast on Friday.

As convoys of military vehicles and power-and-light trucks from as far away as Quebec trundled down nearby highways to hard hit towns on the South Shore and North Shore, buses of high school and college aged players made their way into South Boston to join in this year's tournament.

Even after you've left the building, it takes a while to get the echo of all those whistles blowing out of your head.
