Win secures 8 seed for the Canes in DII Playoffs

By John Seaver

The Hurricane girls basketball team used a smothering full court press to completely shut down the Mill River offense in a convincing 32-20 win Saturday afternoon on Senior recognition day.  After losing Thursday night to Mill River on their senior night, the Canes gained a measure of retribution by creating havoc with their pressure defense that forced the Minutemen into numerous turnovers.  "It was a good win, the girls played hard" said coach Troy Guerin.

Cory Lieberman

Mill River senior Olivia McPhee got the visitors going early with 5 first quarter points but was forced to the bench with her third foul with 5:06 to play in the half.  The Canes took advantage opening up a 18-9 lead at the half as Carolyn North knocked down two tough shots and Cory Lieberman had a nice inside move for a bucket and hit the only 3 pointer of the game for the Canes.

Madison Druge

Hartford extended the lead to 17 in the second half as the Mill River offense could never get untracked.  Senior Morgan White scored 6 of her team high 9 points in the second half.  White and fellow senior Madison Druge returned to the lineup Thursday vs Mill River after arriving home from a school trip to Morocco. "I thought they (girls on the trip) were rusty and slow to react to the ball Thursday, much improved today." said Guerin.

Corey Lieberman added 7 & North 5 for the Canes.  Mill River was led by McPhee with a game high 10 points.

The Canes offense shot just 1-19 from beyond the arc. " Too many 3's. We need to move the ball more and look in and then out, (our) percentage would greatly increase." said Guerin.

Morgan White, Jessica Roberts, Tessa Badgley battle for rebound

Hartford's win locks them in as the 8th seed in the DII playoffs while Mill River's loss coupled with Lamoille's loss vs Lyndon makes the Minutemen the 9 seed earning them a trip back to Hartford next week in round 1 of the playoffs.  That will be 3 games in 5 days between these MVL rivals. Guerin added  "It's going to be a battle (next week), no secrets at this point."

Morgan White

Category 5 Hurricane Player of the Game: Senior forward Morgan White.  White scored a team high 9 points and was a presence on defense and on the boards all night.  Welcome back from Morocco Morgan & Madison.
