A Lesson in Taking the Leap
Andrea's Hair Studio is Turning 20!
Almost 20 years ago Andrea Marquay took a leap of faith by leaving her comfortable job at the very successful Hilde’s Hair Salon and venturing out on her own. This May she will celebrate the anniversary of opening her own salon in Norwich.
Andrea had been working at Hilde’s for 14 years when a client noticed an open office rental in Norwich and suggested that she take a look at it. She checked out the small space and decided to jump on it. Despite being terrified, Andrea was lucky to have a great support system. Her employers and clients at Hilde’s helped her every step of the way. Andrea also leaned on SCORE to help her learn the ins and outs of the business world.
After only one month in business Andrea was busy enough to hire another stylist. Most of her current staff have been with her for many years. Anita (the receptionist at Andrea’s Hair Studio) has been working with her for 19 years, Sally Gottling (stylist) for 14 years, and Kara Ghio who after 26 years at Hilde’s, joined Andrea in September 2016.
“The biggest challenge I had and lesson I learned was how to get the best out of my staff. I had to learn how to become a good leader.” This was made even harder by the fact that most of her employees were friends and coworkers. But the risk and hard work paid off. Most of her clients were with Andrea over 30 years ago when working at Hilde’s salon.
Andrea said she credits much of her success to her support system and is excited to see what the future will bring and to celebrate 20 years in the center of Norwich.
