Teen charged with plotting to shoot up high school in western Vermont town of Fair Haven
Threats came as Florida high school massacre grabbed national headlines
FAIR HAVEN, VT - A teenager from Poultney was arrested Thursday and now faces extremely serious charges after he made what authorities apparently believe were credible threats to shoot up Fair Haven High School on the western side of Vermont.
Jack Sawyer, 18, was lodged overnight at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility and he is due in court on Friday to answer charges of attempted aggravated murder, attempted first degree murder and attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
"Over the last two days members of the Fair Haven Police Department along with detectives from the Vermont State Police have been investigating a threat of a school shooting at the Fair Haven High School," Lieutenant Reg Trayah said in statement issued late Thursday evening. "During this investigation, detectives learned that Jack Sawyer from Poultney had communicated his desire to cause mass casualties at the Fair Haven High School."
The lieutenant said the investigation remains active and detectives are continuing to conduct interviews and collect evidence.
Vermont State Police are asking that anyone who has had recent contact with Sawyer or who might have information regarding this incident get in touch with detectives at the Rutland Barracks.
