Hartford's Megan Bushway leads the Canes to a win over Rutland

Bushway rains down 3's on Rutland

The Hurricanes girls basketball team had a few things going against them in tonight's game vs Rutland.  First of all, the Canes were playing without two key seniors, Morgan White & Madison Druge who were out of the country on a school trip.  Second, they were stepping up in class hosting the D1 Raiders who were hungry to get untracked this season.  But this didn't seem to phase the Canes as several players stepped up their game to make up for the short bench and defeated the Raiders 51-46 at Hanley Gymnasium Monday night.

Cory Lieberman

Michaela Ricker was the first to step up knocking down 2 three pointers early in the first quarter.  Two inside buckets by Corey Lieberman and a three pointer from senior captain Megan Bushway gave the Canes a first quarter lead , 17-10, they would never relinquish.  The Canes extended their lead to 28-19 at the half as freshman guard Jasmine Jenkins terrorized the Raider back court for several steals that led to easy buckets at the other end.  Jenkins ended the game with the unusual double-double of 10 points and 10 steals.

Bushway was hot all night getting free for open shots making 6 of 8 from beyond the arc and leading the team with 22 points.

The Canes opened up an 11 point lead midway through the 3rd quarter but Rutland was not going away.  The Raiders went on a 7-0 run to close the quarter and cut the Canes lead to 34-30 heading into the final eight minutes.

Elise Magro scored 12 of her game high 23 points in the fourth quarter keeping her team in the game.  The Raiders twice cut the Hurricane lead to 1 but Bushway was not to be denied on this night as she calmly nailed 3 three pointers in the 4th quarter to stave off Raider rallies.

A bit of steam came out of the gym with just under a minute to play when Bushway crumbled to the floor clutching her injured left knee.  She needed to be carried off the court with her team holding a slim 3 point lead.

The Raiders had one more chance with less than 5 seconds to play but Magro's tying three was off the mark.  Jenkins canned two free throws to give the Canes the 5 point victory.

Coach Troy Guerin was pleased after the game. "Great effort by everyone even the girls that didn't play, very positive vibes coming from the bench. The girls reached deep to find that second wind when needed.  Time after time (they) came up with the big play when needed."

The win improves the Canes record to 8-8 while the Raiders fall to 4-11 on the season.  Lieberman chipped in 9 points and Ricker added 8 for the Canes.

Category 5 Hurricane Player of the Game: Captain Megan Bushway.  The senior guard was a calming influence all night and made some huge clutch shots in the waning minutes to secure the win.  Coach Guerin on his senior captain. "Meg plays with heart, she came up huge tonight when we needed her. She came back from an MCL early, never complained and continues to battle every time she takes the court."

The Hurricanes will be back on the court Thursday at Fair Haven.  The Canes will be looking for pay back for a lost to the Slaters earlier in the season.
