Ebike rider down from the flu, but not out

For the life of me I can’t remember the last time I had the flu. All I can say is it’s been well over a decade.

What’s more, I’ve never once had a flu shot; I’ve never needed one. No matter how bad or lethal the flu season my body’s natural defenses always seemed to be up to the task of repelling that year’s strain.

Not in January 2018, they weren’t.

Four days after New Year’s I was suddenly overcome with the flu-lite — the least dangerous of two strains sweeping the nation this flu season. For nearly three weeks I battled daily low-grade fevers and downed gallons of hot chicken soup, hoping the natural anti-virals in the yellow broth would be the cure.

Just when I thought the worst was over, the fever and body aches and generalized crappy feeling returned.

Finally, about a week ago, I was over the flu and felt strong enough to hit the winter roads on my Go Plus ebike.

Route 5 in Hartford still had a lot of snow in late January.

It was strange feeling the icy cold wind against my face after weeks of being house-bound. It was painful as it was exhilarating.

But overall it felt good to be back on the road again and on my way to downtown Hanover, where my first Starbucks coffee in weeks and a 53-cent refill awaited me.

Too bad you can’t park on the sidewalk.
